Mama Juana is a traditional drink from the Dominican Republic with origins dating back to the island native Taíno over 800 years. Originally prepared as a medicinal herbal tea, post-Columbus, alcohol was added to the recipe. Mama Juana is a cultural icon passed down for generations. Mama Juana is made of a mixture of roots and herbs left to soak in rum, red wine, and honey, creating a unique taste similar to fine port wine. Mamajuana can be sipped neat, on the rocks, or used in cocktails.
